How to Make Dehydrated Cinnamon Apples
- Slice the apples. You can use a mandolin or a sharp knife to slice them as thin as possible. The thickness of the slices will determine how long they need to bake to become crunchy chips.
- Prepare for baking. Lay the sliced apples in a single layer on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. You may need to use two pans so that the apples are not overlapping.
- Add cinnamon. Dust the apples with the ground cinnamon. Flip them over and dusk again.
- Bake the apple slices. Place the baking trays in the oven for 1 hour. Remove the trays and flip the apples and put them back for 1 more hour.
- Let them cool. Turn the oven off and leave the baking sheets in the oven for an additional 15 minutes to begin cooling them down. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely to gain their crispness.
How to Store
The homemade apple chips can be stored in an airtight container or airtight storage bags. Glass jars or glass storage containers also work great. The apple chips can be stored at room temperature for up to one week.
Recipe Tips
- The best apples can be found during peak season from September to October. This is usually the time apple picking for fresh fruit is most popular.
- When picking your apples make sure to choose a larger size of apples. The slices will shrink while baking in the oven.
- Using a mandolin is a great tool to get the apple slices however if you do not have one, like myself, a knife will work just fine.
- Cut the apple slices as thin and evenly as possible. The thinner the better because they cook faster and will be very crispy.
- This recipe can be made in a food dehydrator (in dehydrator trays) or oven.
- Spread the apple slices into 1 layer on two baking sheets. Try not to overlap the apple chips so that they can get as crispy as possible.
- Do not package the dehydrated apples for storage until they are completely cool. You don't want to trap any moisture.
Recipe FAQ
Dehydrated food usually contains less than 20% of the moisture content. The dehydrating process involves circulating hot and dry air across the food which removes a lot of the water and results in dehydrating the food. With freeze-drying, hot air is not used in the process.
The best apples for dehydrating are Honeycrisp, Gala or Fuji. All of them are sweet and have a great texture. If you prefer less sweetness in your dried apples, Granny Smith apples are more tart than sweet.
Slicing the apples as thin as possible is key for crispy apple chips. Also, spread the apple slices out on the baking sheet in one even layer making sure they do not overlap to allow the edges to crisp. You can also leave them in the oven even longer if needed.
