My love of chai tea lattes began when I ordered my first cup from Panera Bread. The aroma of all of the flavors together in one cup, I just absolutely fell in love with it, so much that I would purchase one at least twice a week. Over time those expenses add up! So, of course, I eventually had to figure out how to make my own at home. With many trial and errors, I finally mastered the perfect latte.

- Perfect for the fall and winter season.
- Uses fall spices like cinnamon, ginger and cloves.
- It’s Vegan and dairy-free.
What's in a Chai Tea Latte
You only need a few ingredients and it could be ready in ten minutes. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Oat milk - I’ve found that oat milk is the best dairy-free option to use since it’s thicker and creamier than most plant-based milks and has a neutral taste.
- Chai tea bags - these are the chai tea bags that I used for this recipe.
- Maple syrup - It helps naturally sweeten this healthy hot chocolate
- Vanilla extract - enhances the sweetness of the latte and adds a warm and comforting taste. Make sure to use real vanilla extract, not an imitation.
- Spices - the spices used for this drink includes ground cinnamon, ground cloves and ground ginger.
How to Make the Chai Latte with Oat Milk
- Warm the oat milk in a pot over medium heat until it just starts to simmer, then immediately remove from heat.
- Add the chai tea bags and leave to steep for 5-7 minutes.
- Remove and discard the tea bags, then add the rest of the ingredients and whisk well to combine.
- Taste and adjust sweetness or spice to your liking, then place the pot back over low heat for a few minutes until warmed through and serve immediately.
How to Make Iced Chai Latte
If you want to enjoy this beverage cold, it's so simple to make.
- After removing and discarding the tea bags and adding the rest of the ingredients to the pot, whisk well to combine.
- Taste and adjust sweetness or spices to your liking.
- Let it cool to room tempurature.
- Add ice to a glass.
- Pour the chai latte over the ice and serve.
Sweetner Variations
This chai latte uses natural sweeteners and is free from artificial flavors and ingredients. If you prefer a specific sweetener, feel free to use it however here are some suggestions for sweeteners that work best:
- Maple syrup. This is my favorite natural sweetener for drinks. Look for organic maple syrup without added ingredients.
- Honey. Another great sweetener however if you are vegan this would not be an option for you.
- Date or agave syrup. Both are natural sweeteners and a great alternative to the ones listed above.
Recipe Tips
- Storage. This recipe is best when consumed fresh however you can store any leftovers in the fridge in a sealed mason jar or airtight container for 1 day. You can reheat it in a pot on the stove or place it in the microwave and heat in 20 second intervals until you get it to the temperature you want.
- Milk options. I’ve found that oat milk is the best dairy-free option to use since it’s thicker and creamier than most plant-based milks. You could also use other dairy-free milks like cashew milk, almond milk, soy milk or regular dairy milk if you prefer.. Note that taste may vary based on what milk you use.
- Warming the milk. Avoid scorching the milk by warming it on low to medium heat and stirring frequently.
Is It a Thyroid-Friendly Recipe? Health officials state that people who struggle with hypothyroidism may have better results if they avoid dairy products. A traditional chai latte contains dairy milk. Dairy is known for its inflammatory properties and is one of the most common dietary sensitivities. This recipe uses oat milk as a replacement making it dairy-free.
