The Health Benefits of Golden Milk
Golden milk, which is also known as turmeric milk or turmeric latte, is a bright yellow drink that originated in India. It’s traditionally made by warming milk with turmeric and other various spices, such as cinnamon and ginger.
Turmeric has been used to combat colds, inflammation, joint pain, and digestive issues alongside many other ailments. Turmeric is packed with immune-boosting antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins, and healthy fats that help protect cells from damage, fight off disease and infections.
Black pepper is also a key ingredient used in a turmeric latte. Piperine is a vital active component of black pepper and, when combined with the curcumin in turmeric, it has been shown to help increase the absorption of turmeric in the body.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Making golden milk recipe only uses a handful of ingredients. See the full recipe card below for the total amounts needed.
- Oat milk - Helps give this latte a creamy taste but you can also use whichever plant based (or dairy) milk you prefer such as unsweetened almond milk, soy milk or coconut milk.
- Ground turmeric powder - Provides this beverage with that famous golden color. Although I haven’t personally tried it myself, you can use fresh turmeric instead of the dry spice. About 1 teaspoon of dried turmeric is equal to about 1 tablespoon of fresh turmeric.
- Ground cinnamon - You can also use cinnamon sticks if you prefer. I recommend starting with ½ stick and adding more if you wish.
- Ground ginger - I decided to use ground ginger for convenience but feel free to use fresh ginger if you have it on hand.
- Vanilla extract - enhances the sweetness of the latte and adds a warm and comforting taste.
- Maple syrup - you can also use honey, agave, stevia, or other preferred sweeteners
- Ground black pepper - Helps the body to absorb turmeric better by enhancing the bioavailability of the curcumin found in turmeric. It also adds a hint of peppery flavor to the drink.
How to Make the Vegan Golden Milk Turmeric Latte
- Combine ingredients: Add the oat milk, turmeric powder, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla extract, maple syrup and pepper to a small pot.
- Whisk: Place the pot to warm over medium heat and whisk all of the ingredients together.
- Simmer: Allow the ingredients to simmer, for about 10 minutes, whisking occasionally, until smooth and hot but never allow it to boil.
- Serve: When the latte is warmed, remove from the heat and pour into your favorite mug and enjoy.
Storage and Reheat
This recipe is better when freshly made. If you happen to have any of the latte leftover, you can simply save it in an air sealed coffee mug or container and place it in the refrigerator.
To reheat the latte you can warm it in a pot on the stove and whisk all of the ingredients together again. You can also warm it in a microwave safe mug and stir all of the ingredients together once warmed.
Variations and Substitutes
How to add froth: To make the latte with a frothy foam, I recommend using a handheld milk frother, immersion blender or pouring the mixture into a blender. Please note, turmeric stains easily and may stain the blender. To help prevent staining, wash the blender, with soap and warm water immediately after blending the latte.
Iced turmeric latte: If you want to enjoy this beverage cold, after mixing all the flavors together simply pour it over some ice!
Modify flavors to taste: The ingredients in this latte can easily adapted to your personal taste preferences. You can add more or less of the turmeric, ginger or cinnamon to adjust the flavor and spice or more maple syrup or other sweetener for a sweeter taste.
Recipe FAQ
For this recipe, I’ve only used oat milk and almond milk. Oat milk gives the latte a creamer taste. Almond milk has a little more water in it than oat milk. Any non-dairy plant-based milk will work great.
Also, look for unsweetened non-dairy milk so that you can control how sweet you want to make the latte.
This recipe does not contain any caffeine however there is such a thing as a golden milk coffee, which does contain caffeine.
The most significant benefit of the piperine in black pepper is its ability to boost the absorption of curcumin in turmeric, which aids as an antioxidant by acting as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal in the body.
Herbs like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon are herbs known to help speed up your metabolism, which is important for people with low thyroid function.
