    Ingredients You'll Need

This quick vegan smoothie is easy to make and uses simple ingredients. There is no food coloring used in this recipe. The red hue comes from the strawberries and beet powder and the brown color comes from the cocoa powder. Here's what you'll need to make this smoothie:

    • Oat milk - For this recipe oat milk was used but any plant-based milk works.
    • Strawberries - make sure to use frozen strawberries to make the red velvet cake smoothie nice and thick.
    • Banana -helps to sweeten and thicken the smoothie. Make sure to freeze a ripe banana before blending.
    • Unsweetened Cocoa powder - you can't have red velvet without the cocoa powder for the chocolate flavor. You can also use cacao powder.
    • Beet powder - this will provide a natural red color, without using food dye as well the provided nutrients from beets.
    • Vanilla extract - helps to enhance the flavors in the smoothie
    • Maple syrup - helps to sweeten this drink and balance the bitter flavor from the cocoa powder.

How to Make the Red Velvet Cake Smoothie

You can make this delicious red velvet smoothie recipe in less than five minutes, here's how:

    1. Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender.
    2. Blend well until smooth.
    3. Taste and adjust. After blending the smoothie, taste it. You can add more milk, frozen strawberries or maple syrup as needed to reach your desired taste or consistency. You can add more beets if you like an earthy taste, ice if you like it thicker, more oat milk if you like it thinner, or more maple syrup for extra sweetness.

    Substitutes and Variations

Here are some alternatives you can use in this red velvet shake recipe:

    • Milks- feel free to swap out the oat milk used for almond milk, cashew milk or any plant based milk you prefer.
    • Cherries - you can substitute the frozen strawberries for frozen cherries. The cherries are a bit sweeter than strawberries so I would suggest adding in the maple syrup at the end and adjust it for your taste.
    • Beets - you can use raw beets for this recipe if you prefer. 1/2  tablespoon of beetroot powder is the equivalent of about 1/4 cup of raw, frozen beets.
    • Sweeteners - you can substitute the maple syrup with medjool dates, date syrup, honey or agave.

    Tips for Making the Smoothie

    • Use frozen fruit. By using frozen strawberries and a frozen banana you'll get a thick and creamy smoothie.
    • Make it vegan. If you're vegan or prefer to keep things dairy free, make sure to use non-dairy milk.
    • Blending the smoothie. I recommend using a high-speed blender to get the smoothie extra creamy and it works great for blending up the frozen fruit. If you don't have a high-speed blender, blend your smoothie in stages by adding in the frozen fruit a little at a time.
