When I think of appetizers for a get together or game day, the first thing that comes to mind is delicious appetizers and dips. These homemade baked gluten free mozzarella sticks are a classic appetizer that everyone loves.

Just like the traditional mozzarella sticks recipe, they're a perfect cheesy appetizer, that's crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside but gluten free! They'd be an awesome appetizer for the Super Bowl to pair with some vegan buffalo cauliflower wings.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

Making homemade mozzarella sticks with string cheese is easy because the cheese is already perfect portioned. Mozzarella sticks are the best, especially when their hot and extra gooey. I sometimes have remorse for eating so many since their usually deep fried, but fear not, this recipe is baked, making it a healthier option. That means you can have your Super Bowl party snacks, and eat them too.

    Ingredients You'll Need

    • Mozzarella cheese sticks - store-bought mozzarella string cheese is the easiest way to make this recipe. You can look for organic mozzarella string cheese or buy your favorite brand.
    • Gluten Free Flour - this will initially coat the sting cheese before dipping it in the egg wash.
    • Egg - you'll need 2 eggs for this recipe. The egg will help the panko stick to the mozzarella sticks.
    • Dairy free milk - I added a tablespoon of almond milk to the eggs and whisked them together. Any milk you prefer will also work.
    • Gluten free bread crumbs - the breadcrumbs will give the mozzarella sticks a nice coating on the outside and a little crisp. If you like to have more of a crunch to your mozzarella sticks, you can coat them in panko breading instead. Make sure to choose gluten free bread crumbs.
    • Seasonings - Italian season, salt and ground black pepper
    • Marinara sauce - you can make homemade marinara sauce or you can buy your favorite brand from the grocery store.

How to Make the Gluten Free Mozzarella Sticks

    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. You will need 3 separate bowls for making the mozzarella sticks.
    • Place flour in one bowl, the whisked eggs and milk in another bowl and combine bread crumbs, italian seasoning. salt, ground black pepper in the third bowl.
    • Take one mozzarella cheese stick. Dip it in the flour and roll it around until it's lightly coated. Remember  to coat the ends of the cheese stick as well.
    • Next, dip the flour-coated mozzarella stick into egg wash and roll it around until coated.
    • Then,  dip the mozzarella stick into the breadcrumb mixture and roll it around until evenly coated.

    • Dip the mozzarella stick into egg wash again and then back into the breadcrumb mixture again for a second coating.
    • Then, place the coated mozzarella stick on the parchment paper lined baking sheet.
    • Repeat these steps for remaining mozzarella sticks. When all of the mozzarella sticks are coated, place the baking sheet in the freezer for 1 hour.

    • When they're ready to bake, preheat the oven to 410 degrees F and remove the cheese sticks from the freezer while the oven preheats
    • Bake them for 12- 15 minutes or until heated golden brown, turning them halfway through baking.
    • Serve them hot with a sprinkle of parsley on top of them with a side of marinara.

    Baked Mozzarella Sticks Tips

    • Lightly coat the string cheese as in the egg wash. If the bowl of breadcrumbs gets too wet from the egg wash, it'll clump together and won't stick to the mozzarella sticks well.
    • If you only coat the mozzarella sticks once, there won't be enough bread to contain the melted cheese when you're baking them. Don't skip double breading the mozzarella sticks in the egg wash and breadcrumb coating.
    • Freezing the mozzarella sticks prior to baking is equally as important as double breading them, don't skip this step as well.
    • If the cheese oozes out of your mozzarella sticks while baking, that means they're being overcooked. Lower the temperature of your oven slightly.

    Recipe FAQ

Do you need to flip mozzarella sticks?

Half way through baking, make sure to rotate each mozzarella stick to allow browning all the way around.

How long do mozzarella sticks go in the oven?

The mozzarella sticks should bake for 8 - 10 minutes or until golden brown.

What temperature should mozzarella sticks be cooked at?

Preheat the oven to bake 350 degrees F.

How do you stop mozzarella sticks from leaking?

If you find that your mozzarella sticks tend to leak the cheese out, double coat the sticks before baking. After applying the first coat of panko bread, place the mozzarella into the egg wash again and then into the panko, making sure to give it a full coating.

    Can you overcook mozzarella sticks?

The mozzarella sticks can easily overcook and curdle. To keep this from happening, bake the sticks until the panko bread is lightly golden brown, 8 - 10 minutes.
